Guam EPA to hold last waste site identification public meeting tomorrow; meeting location changed

  • NOTE TO MEDIA AND THE PUBLIC: The location of the February 24 public meeting has been changed. The meeting will now be held at the Chalan Pago Community Center, next to the Jose Atoigue Ball Park in Chalan Pago. Signs will be posted to mark the route, and directions to the community center are available below and on maps posted at the Ordot/Chalan Pago Mayor's Office. The meeting will start at 6:30 p.m.

The Guam Environmental Protection Agency will hold a third and final public meeting tomorrow to solicit information from the public about potential hazardous and other waste or dump sites on Guam that remain undiscovered.

"Response from the public at the first two meetings has been extremely helpful in identifying several potential dump sites that the Agency was previously unaware of," said Guam EPA project manager Walter Leon Guerrero. "Help from the public in identifying these sites is invaluable, because otherwise they might remain undiscovered and pose real risks to our water or land resources," he added.

Guam EPA encourages residents who may have knowledge of areas where potentially hazardous substances or trash may have been dumped, spilled, stored, buried, or abandoned to attend tomorrow's public meeting at the Ordot/Chalan Pago Community Center. The meeting starts at 6:30 p.m.

To reach the community center if you're heading east on Route 4 towards Mangilao, pass the turnoff to the Ordot dump and proceed to the next traffic light (Maimai Street intersection). Turn right at the light onto Santa Cruz Drive; turn right onto Chilenko St.; and turn left at Chalan Huego. The community center is on the left, next to the Jose Atoigue Ball Park.

If residents are unable to attend the public meeting or wish to learn more about this effort, they are encouraged to contact Walter Leon Guerrero of Guam EPA at 475-1658 or .
