What To Do With Household Hazardous Waste

Guam EPA's Quick-Reference Guide

Tips on proper disposal of hazardous waste

DO NOT dispose of hazardous household products:

" in your household trash (could hurt the garbage hauler; could damage the garbage truck; could seep into our groundwater or into surface waters from the landfill)

" by dumping them down storm drains or into streams (storm drains send water directly to our surface waters and on to the ocean without treatment; toxics poison the fish and coral and can end up in our drinking water supply)

" by pouring them down your sink or toilet (may cause an explosion in the underground pipes; chemicals may pass through the treatment plant untreated, and on into the Pacific)

" by pouring on the ground (may seep into our sole-source aquifer or be washed down storm drains or into surface waters)

" by burning (toxic materials often become more dangerous when they burn; it's illegal to burn any trash in some areas)

These illegal disposal methods can endanger your health, the health of others, and the environment.

DO:

" use up all of the product. Give usable, leftover products to friends or neighbors, or donate to churches, schools, or community groups.

" use and store products containing hazardous substances carefully to prevent any accidents at home. Never store hazardous products in food containers. Keep products containing hazardous materials in their original containers and never remove the labels.

" use non-hazardous or less hazardous alternatives whenever possible. Reduce the amount and/or toxicity of products with hazardous components, and use only the amount needed to get the job done. Many natural products can also take the place of hazardous cleaning products.

" take unwanted products (free of charge) to Guam EPA's Hasso Guam program. For more information, call the Guam EPA Hazardous Waste Program at 475-1658.

" learn more about proper disposal. Visit U.S. EPA's Household Hazardous Waste, Steps to Safe Management page.

" look for the Guam Recycling Guide in your phone book. The Guide lists recycling facilities and contains convenient waste reduction tips. You can also download the current version of the guide here (PDF, 476K).
