Earth Week 2005: April 16-23

Don't waste Guam's futureThe Guam Environmental Protection Agency is proud to announce that Earth Week 2005 will be celebrated April 16-23. Earth Day is celebrated worldwide on April 22, and Guam traditionally celebrates Earth Week during the third week in April. This year, Guam EPA and the Environmental Education Subcommittee of the Guam Watershed Planning Committee are organizing several events to celebrate Earth Week and raise environmental awareness. This site will be updated as new activities are announced.

This year's Earth Week theme is "Don't waste Guam's future."

Friday, April 8
Earth Week Poster Contest entries due to Guam EPA
Guam EPA and the Watershed Planning Committee are sponsoring the "Don't Waste Guam's Future" Poster Contest. Twelve winners (one each from grades 1-12) will be announced during Earth Week. The winners will be featured in a 2006 calendar or used in posters or other promotional material. Information about the contest has been distributed to island schools. For more information, visit the

Friday, April 8
Deadline for Governor's Green School Award Entries
Showcase your school's environmental programs. Tell us how your school is protecting the environment through recycling, collecting cans or paper, tree planting, or anything that teaches students the importance of our environment. The winning school will receive a prize for beautification of their school including recycling bins, trees for planting, and assistance in painting an environmental mural. Forms and details are available here (PDF, 20K). Nominations are due by 5 p.m. Friday, April 8, 2005. Three finalists will be chosen -- finalists must set up a display at the Island Pride Festival showcasing their school's activities.



Thursday, April 14
Deadline for Environmental Steward Award Nominations
Nominate an individual, community group, or business for our inaugural "Environmental Stewardship" awards. Forms and details are available here (PDF, 16K). Nominations are due by 5 p.m. Thursday, April 14, 2005. Winners will be announced at the Island Pride Festival on April 30.


Saturday, April 23, 7 a.m.
Na' La Bonita Cleanup
Guam EPA and the Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) are teaming up again for the Na' La Bonita Guam cleanup event on April 23. The cleanup starts at 7 a.m.

Please download and review Guam EPA's Cleanup Safety Tips (PDF, 28K) for important information on procedures and precautions before and during the cleanup event.

This year's cleanup will concentrate on Route 4. Meeting points for the cleanup are as follows:

  1. Chief Quipuha Loop (for Chief Quipuha Loop to Ada's Mortuary)
  2. Ada's Mortuary (for Ada's Moruary to Chalan Pago Catholic Church)
  3. Chalan Pago Catholic Church (for Chalan Pago Catholic Church to Pago Bay Bridge)
  4. Pago Bay Bridge (for Pago Bay Bridge to 7-Day Super Market)
  5. Ylig Bridge (for Ylig Bridge to Country Club of the Pacific)
  6. Country Club of the Pacific entrance (for Country Club of the Pacific to First Beach, Ipan)

Saturday, April 30, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Earth Week Island Pride Festival
Join Guam EPA and the Guam Visitors Bureau as we continue the "Island Pride" campaign with this fun and educational festival. This environmentally-friendly family event will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 30. The event will feature games, contests, entertainment, food, and lots more.
